Headspace - Best for Beginners

The most gentle introduction to meditation available. The Basics course (10 sessions, 10 minutes) is excellent. Animations explaining meditation concepts are genuinely helpful. Also great for sleep (sleepcasts) and focus music.
Waking Up (Sam Harris) - Best for Depth
Price: $14.99/month (free upon request)
Takes meditation seriously as a practice for understanding consciousness, not just stress relief. The "Moments" feature delivers 1-minute prompts throughout the day. Anyone who can't afford it can email support for a free year.
Insight Timer - Best Free Option
Price: Free (Premium: $9.99/month)
150,000+ free meditations. Quality varies but top teachers are excellent. The meditation timer with ambient sounds is the best available. Community features add social accountability.
Calm - Best for Sleep
Price: $14.99/month or $69.99/year
Sleep Stories are the killer feature — bedtime narratives by Matthew McConaughey, Stephen Fry, and others. If falling asleep is your challenge, Calm is worth it.
